Challenge Completions
When I was 25 years old, I was in grad school to get my Masters in Teaching from Simmons College in Boston. I was living in a little basement apartment with my 2 cats, walking distance from Simmons in The Fenway. The apartment was a big studio with an alcove for my double bed, dresser and a chair; separate kitchen, HUGE closet, and bathroom. It had really big windows, waist height to very tall ceilings. I was also an advisor to my sorority, Alpha Delta Pi, at Boston University.
One day when I was at a sorority meeting, my apartment was broken into. About a week earlier, some guy had knocked on the door asking for some random person, so I know it was him staking out the place. Since my apartment was in the basement, it was the only one there, next to the laundry room. It had 3 locks on the door (including an iron bar that locked into place on the door and a metal slot in the floor) and bars on the windows, so I never felt unsafe until then.
My boyfriend at the time went to my apartment to wait for me to finish my meeting and found the door busted in, the iron bar bent (!!), and my poor kitties hiding in the closet. All that was taken was some jewelry (not too expensive), my TV & VCR and maybe my CD player. I didn’t own much because I was a poor grad student, luckily. My uncle, who was a contractor, came over to try to fix the door and locks and bend the iron bar back but it was really only a band aid. I complained to the owner of the building, but for the next several months that I lived there (can’t remember when I moved), he didn’t do anything, so it was a good thing my uncle was able to patch things up. It was a crazy situation!
